Another week in La Paloma

Ah.. this week was super fast and slow all at the same time!.. and I don't know how that makes sense.. but it's weird that it's already Pday again!

Just wanted to tell you all THANK YOU for writing of me and thinking of me. Your words and letters always help me so much!

THINGS THAT HAPPENED:
-We travelled to this city called Cuided Del Ester (atleast I think that's how you spell it..) and we had a conference there with Dallin H Oaks!!! well.. kind of. He was in Resistencia.. another mission in Argentina.. but there was camera's on us and them and we could see eachother on screens. So he was talking to two missions. It was really cool. Him and his wife both spoke.. and then a guy translated for him. So so cool. He spoke on revelation and inspiration.

-We are teaching lots.. but still having a hard time getting people to recieve us for a second lesson. We are also focusing on reactivating members.. so we're doing a lot of tracking down people. haha.. it's fun. Something crazy about this city.. is there is literally no street signs or any directions or markers or anything.. so that's really fun.. hahah.

-Something funny.. we were walking to an appointment to teach an investigator.. and all of the sudden we here some shouts and barking and all of the sudden a bull comes charging out of this tall grass to our right.. haha I was dying! It took of sprinting down the street in another direction with about 5 dogs and a man and 1 kid running after it.. it was so funny.. it shouldn't have been as funny as it was, because it was probably that pour family's livelyhood.. but I was dying. it was just hilarious. ahh... #onlyinParaguay Shoot... i hope you all think that was as funny as I did.. because looking at it written out doesn't seem that funny. Maybe it's a just "you had to be there sort of thing"

-We taught an awesome lesson this week. A couple weeks ago.. I think my first week here we contacted this girl named Carol.. she was sitting on a bench and just hanging out by the avenue like most people here.. and we tried and tried to find her house later but we couldn't.. anyways.. long story shorter.. and a few miracles later.. we finally found her house! seriously the hand of the Lord was there. Anyways.. it was pouring rain and dark when we found her.. and we started talking to her on her front porch with very little light. she opened up to us a little bit and we started teaching her about God.. and who he is.. and who she is as a daughter of God. The spirit was so strong. I could tell she was on the verge of tears the entire time. She is 16 and has had a pretty hard life. We taught and invited her to pray at the end.. and she said the most sincere prayer ever. She finished with tears rolling down her face. She is VERY DIFFICULT for me to understand because she literally speaks straight Portuguese.. but I'm able to follow what's going on based on what Hermana Olvera is saying. anyways.. the rest of the week she wasn't available to meet again. I hope so badly that she doesn't forget what she felt that night. Satan works hard on us right before and after something amazing happens. Ugh.. so I'm praying for her. she is amazing. I want to help her so badly!

Anyways.. all is well here in La Paloma. My feet are basically stained orange now from the sand and red dirt that is caked onto my feet by the end of the day! I have lots of bug bites too!
There is a disease here called Dengue.. and it's passed from mosquitoes.. it's like a really bad a long flue.. and lots of people are getting it right now. It's sad.. and we are doing our best to serve and help them.. but my comp said something really funny this week.. she said "if we don't die from dengue.. we are going to die from some crazy blood poisening from bug repellent.. haha we laughed. we laugh a lot.. it's good.

Two things I know..
First.. I know that every person.. no matter where they are in life or who they are or what they have done or what they are doing can benefit from this gospel. The gospel of Jesus Christ is grand and incredible, but also very simple when you get down to it, and very personal thanks to the atonement. So incredible.
Second.. the Lord is so COMPLETELY aware of us and our desires and needs and our heart. he loves us. I read a talk this week from boyd k packer.. he gave it last april I think.. but he says something along the lines of "of all the names of diety God could have chosen.. he chose Father". I have thought about that constantly this week. I love that. He truly is our father. Literally. Just think about that for a second. Anyways..

I love you ALL! SO SO SO MUCH.

Also.. just a house keeping thing.. I am by no means expecting packages or anything.. but I can only recieve two a year... so maybe hold back from sending those unless it is somethin that I absolutely need or ask for or something like that. BUT! I can always recieve cards and letters and pictures! Printed pictures are always fun!!

I hope you have an amazing week! Thank you for your prayers. When I'm struggling.. I think of you all and how you pray for me and your faith in me. Thank you for your supports. I love you all my family and friends.

Week 2 in Paraguay

Holy moly.. it's Pday again! This week was kind of a long one for me.. but definitely a gooder full of ups and downs and lots of learning!

THINGS THAT HAPPENED:
-I've officially endured my first few rainstorms.. and when I say rainstorm. I mean DUMPING. haha.. so that's awesome. it was great fun.
-We are teaching a lot of people.. and we are able to contact a lot.. and teach a lot of first lessons.. where the Spirit is so strong...where it touches me and their heart.. but we have a hard time getting people to progress. So that's kind of frustrating.. but I'm going to keep having faith.
-One lady in particular.. all of our appointments fell through.. and we were just walking trying to decide what to do. I was praying for someone prepared to be put in our path.. and someone totally was. It was amazing. The theory among the people here.. is that all churches are good. All churches have god in them.. but we try to explain that it really isn't like that. anyways..HER question was if there is one god.. why is there so many churches. AH. It was amazing. I loved it. I get chills thinking abot her. She rocks. We met her on Saturday.. and tried to stop by again on sunday.. but she wasn't there. So we'll see what happens with her this week.
-The branch here is awesome. It is small.. and I REALLY want to build it up. It hit me this week.. that my responsibility is to do exactly that.
-I gave a talk in church this week.. it was definiely a struggle... hahah but I hope the members felt my love. I replaced a missionary that was from paraguay and could speak perfectly and I know they all loved her.. so I'm doing my best to earn their trust and love by working hard and representing my savior the best I can.. anyways.. I was giving a talk.... and s SPIDER crawled onto my paper while I was talking. hahaha I started laughing.. so I flicked it off and carried on. You would have all been so proud. I'm seriously getting better with bugs. You would all be proud. hahaha it rocks
-Our lights in our apartment only got cut a few times this week, and I took only 3 cold showers.. the rest of the time our water heater was working so that was awesome!!
-We eat lunch with a member every day.. and OH MY HEAVENS.. so much food. hahaha you would all die. they just keep pushing it on me. I';m working on creative ways to avoid eating so much as much as possible. Lots of carbs.. .but it's all really yummy. they are all so nice.
-We went to this town called Saltos today for zone conference..about 30 minute taxi ride.. ITS SO BEAUTIFUL HERE.. you all would die. anyways.. there is a store there called shopping china.. and they have this huge store FULL of American imports. It's so awesome. We walked around and I was just giddy. Like hershey chocolate and reeses peanut butter cups. haha it was awesome. You all would have loved it too
-This week we also had to travel to Asuncion.. the capital to do some paper work with other missiories.. it was super fun.. but.. needless to say.. this week I spent 15 hours on a hot and stinky bus.. but so so fun. haahhaha it's an adventure.

Anyways. I was wondering if you all could do something for me.. I really want EASY recipes like for treats and stuff.. cookies.. anything like that.. but as EASY as possible. If any of you have any ideas.. send them my way POR FAVOR.

You're all in my prayers and I miss and love you so much.

Just know even though it's hard I'm doing my best and working my hardest. I represent my Savior. I'm taking that personally. I am trying to only do things that he would approve of. Thank you for your prayers. I really felt them this week. You are all such a strength.

two other hermana's in asuncion with me!! so fun! THey have this SUPER yummy bread thing called Chipa.. so good.. so I'm holding that.

LANGUAGES and first week in ARGENTINA

Oh my goodness!! I AM HERE. IT HAS BEEN THE FASTEST AND SHORTEST WEEK OF MY LIFE. My fingers are flying. I have only 30 more minutes left! So many emails to read! I am typing as fast as I can.

So we got to Posadas. We met President LaPierre and the assistants. It was awesome. I love him you guys. He's awesome. His wife is great too. They are the best.

We stayed in Posadas for 2 nights and got to know President and did a lot of paperwork for our visas and stuff like that.

Anyways.. MY AREA.. I am in this tiny city called La Paloma. It is the farthest north you can go in our mission, and the farthest area from Posadas. We took a 12 HOUR BUS RIDE HERE. You guys.. it was so rough. Goodness. I was dying. And it only broke down ONCE. Miracle. But we finally got here.Oh my gosh. Google map it. It is really close to the boarder of Brazil.

So here.. they speak Spanish.. and Portuegese and Gaurani.. oh my heavens. I am dying here you guys. IT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND. When they are speaking Spanish they speak so fast.. and I can get about 50 or 60 % of what they are saying. sometimes they switch in the middle of what they are saying though.. and that is so tough as well. goodness. Gaurani sounds like some crazy African language or something. So yeah.. understanding is really hard for me. but even these last few days being here.. I have learned a lot, and am slowly understanding more and more. It's MUCH harder to talk. but anyways. yeah. woah.

Somehow here they all understand eachother when they are speaking. It's kind of a miracle. Everyone just speaks and understands 3 languages I guess.. haha it's funny.

The first day here was SUPER hard. We got to work right when we got here, and we were walking around and I was meeting investigators in this area and meeting members, and I could hardly understand anything.. and it was just really discouraging. I cried myself to sleep that night. In my interview with president he told me that it was okay to cry myself to sleep.. and the feelings I would be feeling when I got there was normal. So yeah.. it was a rough day. BUT.. the next day I realized that Satan was just working so hard on me and I wasn't going to let him have influence over me... and I just prayed that I would have faith.. and even though I couldn't understand, the second day WAS AWESOME. I loved it. Teaching real people is so amazing.

Okay.. my companion. Her name is Hermana Olvera.. Hannah Olvera if you want to stalk her on FB.. but yeah. SHE IS AWESOME. She is from Idaho.. she did a year at BYU before she came here. She is almost at 10 months on the mission and this is her first time training. We get along well.. and work hard together. She speaks really really well and I'm learning so much from her.

**I hope this email is making sense because I'm typing so fast**

LA PALOMA: *here is two hours ahead of utah*
it rocks here. the culture is so funny. If they aren't working.. they are at home and sitting in the front yard and drinking mate. HAHA. THEY LOVE MATE. it's hilarious. The houses here are very humble. wow. There are some nicer houses, but most of them are one or two rooms. They cook and eat and basically do everything outside.. and sleep inside. We teach outside. We either squat down and teach or they pull up a chair. Most of the time they have extra chairs. They are all very nice.

There are cars here but most people drive around on motorcycles or mopeds? I don't know how to spell that.. oops. AND THEY ARE SO LOUD. In this town they have one main road that we call the avenue. It's paved with asphault and everything.. and at night they sit around the avenue with their cars parked on the side and hang out and blast SUPER loud music and ride their bikes and motorcylces up and down the avenue. it's so funny. they drive up.. and turn around and then ride back down. it's awesome.

Okay.. so teaching real people.. rather than investigators in the MTC IS SO AWESOME. I LOVE IT. Teaching is awesome.. even though I can hardly speak.

One story from this week:

We were trying to find a girl that we met at a busstop a few days ago.. and we were walking around and asking people if they knew her.. and no one did.. and we asked these people who were sitting in there front yard drinking mate *shocker* and we ended up starting a lesson with them. It was two really young couples. One had a daughter. THEY ARE SPOKE SPANISH. MIRACLE. So I basically understood everything that was being said, but I couldn't jump in anywhere. It was hard. Hermana Olvera is really good at teaching, and kept looking at me to start talking, but I just couldn't find words. It was hard. But we were teaching the restoration.. and I started teaching about joseph smith.. It was choppy but I was just praying SO HARD for the spirit to touch them.. and the spirit was so strong. or atleast I was feeling it. It was awesome. and anyways.. after we got done teaching and set a time to teach them again this week.. one of them turned to me and said even though I didn't speak very well, it didn't matter, because she felt something and that is all that matters. YOU GUYS.. I WAS DYING. THE CHURCH IS SO TRUE. As we walked away from that lesson.. I just was thinking and thinking about that. HOW AMAZING.

How in the world could two 19 year old girls.. no matter hor well they spoke or didn't speak.. how in the world could we convert people if this church wasn't true?? WE COULDNT. Missionaries all around the world convert people though.. because of the spirit. The spirit does the heavy lifting. It's so amazing. Does that make sense? If I had more time I would be able to explain it better.

Anyways.. until I came on a mission.. I don't think I ever realized how much I love you all and my family and how important you all are to me. I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH.

I THINK AND PRAY ABOUT YOU OFTEN. Thank you for your prayers. I need them. I love you you all. I  can't say it enough.

Until next week..

Week 4

HOLA MI FAMILIA (clearly I'm really original at subjects for emails.. and first liners on emails)

I'm sitting here and I don't even know what to say!

THINGS THAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:

-So yesterday, Wednesday, was officially my one month mark in the MTC. What in the world right?! So crazy.
-Also yesterday we got a new district in our zone.. so now we are no longer the only district in our zone! I'm way excited. It's fun to have new missionaries! I hope I can help them in some way!
-So every week volunteers come to the MTC (usually they are RM's who are trying to keep up their Spanish or something like that) and we teach them like a member.. so a member lesson. Anyways.. this week we didn't do that, but instead we got SKYPE a girl in Argentina. I was way nervous but it was SO cool. I was actually able to understand MOST of what she said, even though she spoke fast and had a weird accent. We taught her like a 25 minute lesson on enduring to the end. The guy that was supervising our skype sessions said something really cool.. he said "This is the first opportunity you have to serve and uplift the people of the country that you are called to serve in".. Isn't that COOL?! I loved it. It was a highlight of the week for sure. I just CAN NOT wait to get out there! (ONLY 11 DAYS LEFT IN THE MTC! Does that blow your mind? Because it sure blows mine)
-Choir was the bomb this week as usual. LOVE love choir. Brother Eggott (our choir conductor) shared this story with us.. it's not super long.. but SERIOUSLY it helped me understand the Atonement SO WELL.
-We had our last lesson with one of our investigators that is from Gautemala? (shoot.. I'm terrible at spelling.. Sorry). It was sad to say bye.. BUT HONESTLY YOU GUYS. José changed my life, and he wasn't even a real investigator, but just a member pretending to be, and I've had some of my most spiritual experiences with him at the MTC.. look for the picture. He's the bomb. Love him.
-I had maybe one of the hardest days on my mission so far this week. Literally discouragement had just taken over my whole body.. But in personal prayer that night I realized that I was CHOOSING to be discouraged with myself and that the Lord was disappointed in me at all. Then next day I woke up and decided to not get discouraged one time that day, and just decided to have a good day.. and it totally worked. I just decided that I was going to be so full of faith, that the Lord wouldn't let me fail. It ended up being one of the best days on my mission.

President Faust in October 2001 General Conference:

"Some years ago, President Gordon B Hinkley told 'something of a parable' about a one room school house in the mountains of Virginia where the boys were so rough no teacher had been able to handle them. Then one day an inexperienced young teacher applied. He was told that every teacher had received an awful beating, but the teacher accepted the risk. The first day of school the teacher asked the boys to establish their own rules and the penalty for breaking the rules. The class came up with ten rules, which were written on the blackboard. Then the teacher asked, 'What shall we do with one who breaks the rules?' 'Beat him across the back ten times without his coat on' came the response. A day or so later.. the lunch of a big student, named Tom, was stolen. The thief was located-a hungry little fellow, about 10 years old. As little Jim came up to take his licking, he pleaded to keep his coat on. 'Take your coat off,' the teacher said. 'You helped make the rules.' The boy took off the coat. He had no shirt and revealed a bony little crippled body. As the teacher hesitated with the rod, Big Tom jumped to his feet and volunteered to take the boys licking. 'Very well, there is a certain law that one can become a substitute for another. Are you all agreed?' the teacher asked. After five strokes across Tom's back, the rod broke. The class was sobbing. Little Jim reached up and caught Tom with both arms around his neck. 'Tom, I'm sorry that I stole your lunch, but I was awful hungry. Tom, I will love you till the day I die for taking my licking for me! Yes I will love you forever!"

Holy right? That story hit me hard. I loved it. Each time I read it I learn something more about the Atonement and our role and Christ's role. I love it. I was so humbled when I heard it.

WHAT I LEARNED THIS WEEK: (I'm learning more every week)

-I learned that there is no word for "awkward" in Spanish and I'm pretty sad about it. You can say "weird" or "uncomfortable".. but there is not word for in between those.. so dangit. Shoot.
-Spanish is coming.. Every day. I'm just so excited to get out to the field.
-I learned that I can still be courageous and bold yet humble. That was one of my goals this week. I wan'ted to be courageous when I was teaching and inviting, yet humble. Courageous in the way that I know what I'm saying and testifying of the SO TRUE, but humble in the way that my message can't reach their hearts without his Spirit, and I can't speak Spanish without him, but if I rely on Him than my message can touch them even my Spanish is muy malo... yikes. Does that make sense? So yeah.. working on that this week.
-I learned about Satan this week.. and that his attempts to bring us down are REAL. Gah.. it was a good realization for me this week. It helped me to recognize him, and then push Him away. Discouragement and fear are definitely of him, and not of God. So whenever I got discouraged this week I would immediately pray to not be, and to have the The Lord's spirit to be with me.. and I learned that if I was sincere about it.. THEN IT WORKED. Guys.. it was awesome. Those feelings would leave my heart and head. It was great.
-I learned that sometimes it's easier to feel bad for ourselves, and get engulfed and swallowed up in ugly feelings.. and that is the work of the Adversary!! He WANTS us to feel like that. Yeah.. it was seriously just great revelation for me to recognize him and his efforts on me.
-Last Sunday, we had a PHENOMENAL devo by Elder Stephen B Allen.. it was seriously incredible. Honestly it was exactly what I needed to hear. I love how the Spirit works like that. Some quotes that I wrote down quickly from him.. direct quote "My sacrifice is not going unnoticed in the heavens.. and there are angels taking specific notes on my sacrifices". Woah.. hit me like a ton of bricks. Super cool.

The Lord is SO AWARE OF US. He truly is.

LOVE YOU ALL. Hope your week is great!

One of our teachers made us signs that say "no hablo Inglés y entiendo Inglés. Lo siento"... translation: "I don't speak or understand English.. sorry" yikes. If only that were true. Also.. those are the desks that we sit in for 9 hours a day. Joy.

WEEK 3

HOLA MI FAMILIA!

Goodness is it already Thursday?! I can't even believe it! Another great day in the kingdom! So crazy.. The days at the MTC are LONG, but the weeks fly. This week I hit my halfway mark at the MTC so that is crazy...
Right now, it seems like all my mission is, is being at the MTC. It blows my mind that I will actually be leaving to another country in 17 days to teach people I don't know, in a language that I struggle in. Isn't that crazy? I can't comprehend it fully.. but wow, am I ever excited.

THINGS AND HAPPENINGS OF THE WEEK :)

-We were sitting at Sunday night devotional, and we were talking to everyone around us. I love talking to other missionary's and finding out their story, and where they are from, and where they are going and stuff.. and one of the Elder's behind me asked if I was part Latina or if I had Latina blood in me.. I literally was so shocked and then I could not stop laughing. I'm pretty sure I'm the whitest girl at the MTC. Me and my companion joked about it the rest of the week. So super funny. Also I noticed this week.. I don't have a single tan line on my entire body... so that's great.. hahaha

-This week was another one of MANY huge ups and huge downs, but honestly you guys, I've never been closer to my Savior, and felt him more in my entire life!! So.. anyways. I've been looking for tender mercies everyday, and here are two that I can think of right now. One day we were able to go outside and sit on one of the benches and plan, and it was just SO warm.. and the sun was right on us, and it was just the best. I felt so blessed in that moment. The next tender mercy was at choir this week, because I'm so dang short, they moved some of us midgets closer to the front so we could see the director, and I was sitting next to a girl from Ecuador!! The same place where I went! It was awesome to talk to her. She spoke a tiny bit of English, but she mostly spoke to me in Spanish.. and you GUYS.. I understood probably 80% of what she was saying.. and she was speaking FAST. So that was awesome too.

-Family.. THANK YOU FOR THE PACKAGE!! I read every single one of the cards from all of you, and I appreciate it so much! I just sat there on my floor grinning so hard. It was the best. I'll send a picture of it! Packages MAKE missionary's day. I kid you not.

-Something missionaries do in the MTC, is we do service two times a week. On Saturdays our district is in charge of going to the Senior couple rooms, and cleaning the rooms that were moved out of the week previous. We're basically maids, but it's really fun. I've definitely developed a new talent of changing bed sheets really quickly, efficiently, and making it look good. So that's sweet. The other service we do is sweep and mop the stairs in our residence halls. I'll send pictures of us doing that this week. It's great, and we just go over Spanish the entire time.

-I SAW ADDY THIS WEEK AND IT WAS THE BEST. Of course, burst into tears, but they were happy tears!! It was great to see her. I don't have a picture, but if I see her again, hopefully have my camera.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED THIS WEEK :)

ahhh.. where to begin. I'm sorry if I repeat things from last week, but it's hard to remember what I've already talked about.

-This week we were talking about growing and our capacity becoming larger, and my AWESOME zone leader said something that I really liked. He said: "There is little growth in your comfort zone, and little comfort in your growth zone.." I've heard that before but I never really understood what it meant. But I think that I do now.. being a missionary.. at least for me is an uncomfortable thing. In the MTC, we do a lot of role-playing, and it can be weird to be role playing at first, but if you take it seriously, you can honestly learn a lot. So the elders were pretending to be random people on the street, and we had to go and start a conversation with them and start talking to them, and I was actually really scared to do it! I don't know why, but it was hard for me! So getting out of my comfort zone, and being bold, and extending invitations, is definitely a struggle for me, but while I prayed for the strength to do those things, and fulfill my purpose as a missionary, Heavenly Father blessed me. Sometimes in role plays I don't even know what to say, but when I show the Lord my willingness to open my mouth and at least try to step out of my comfort zone, he blesses me! It's awesome. Does that make any sense? I hope so.

-Another thing I learned.. the Lord's timing is perfect you guys. Holy cow. The testimony of that grows more every day here too. This is the right place for me to be. I honestly believe that part of the reason that my teachers got a job teaching at the MTC is because they needed to teach me. They are SO awesome. Hermana Tuft.. gah  you guys. I wish you all could meet her. She is THE BEST. I'll try and take a picture with her this week. She has helped me in so many ways. This week..she taught our district about the theory of circles. It's super super hard to explain in words over an email, but maybe google it if you get a chance? We can't get on google here so I don't know what will come up, but if you haven't heard it.. it's really cool. Basically, life is full of ups and downs and God gives us them to learn and grow. When we over come an obstacle we are "on top of the world!" but then all the sudden we have another hard thing in our path, and we feel low again. But we forget to look back and see all of the circles, or the hard things that we have accomplished. I don't know if that makes sense.. but yeah. I hope you are able to find that somewhere on google the way she explained it. It rocked.

-I learned just because that I have been set apart and am in the MTC on my mission, doesn't mean that I will be a perfect right now.. and that's hard for me, but I'm slowly learning. poco a poco.

-Our devotional on Tuesday was literally SO awesome. I was praying that whole day that I would be able to feel the spirit and learn something from it that night, and I did! It was great. Elder Don R. Clarke spoke.. he's in the first quorom of the 70? Or something like that.. but anyways. Instead of standing at the podium and talking the entire time, he had a tie clip mic and walked around and talked with people in the audience. It was so engaging. He talked about 10 things he thinks that every missionary should know before they go on a mission. A few things that I loved from his talk: 1) If my sister or brother or dad were inactive or not a member, and I was the missionary assigned to teach them, how hard would I work and pray and teach them? He made the point that I should look at every person like someone's brother or sister or father and work as hard as if they were my own. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to put things into writing. 2) "Revelation comes on the move, and I need to be a missionary of action. Faith without works is dead. 3) I need to KNOW the realness of my calling. I didn't know this before, but in Preach My Gospel, there is an entire chapter dedicated to my call as a missionary.. and I literally represent the Savior. I need to continually be thinking, how would  Christ deal with this situation, or what would he do in this situation right now? That's what I do as a missionary. I was thinking.. when Christ was on the Earth, he healed people.. and that's exactly what I can do.. I CAN HEAL. I have the right, authority, and ability to HEAL people through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I think that is an awesome thought. I'm smiling as I'm typing that. How cool. How lucky am I?

I hope you all have the BEST week.
HAPPY 16TH BIRTHDAY TO MY GIRL ANNACLAIRE. I HOPE YOU HAD THE BEST DAY YESTERDAY. I'm so sad that I wasn't there to celebrate, but don't worry, I ate an ice cream sandwich to celebrate. I love you so much AC. Thanks for being such an incredible example to me!

love from the MTC,
